Breakfast of Champions

In the past, I wasn't much of a breakfast person. I've been a coffee-in-the-morning person for many years, but aside from that, I didn't think much else was needed to jumpstart my day.

However, I attended a seminar for work last year regarding nutrition and one of the things the presenter said stuck with me: "If you're not eating breakfast, essentially you're saying you don't need your brain for the first four hours of your day." I don't know about you, but I kinda like my brain to be working when I'm in the office. (Mostly because if it isn't, I'm unable to think of creative excuses to foist my work on other people.)

After that, I started eating breakfast fairly regularly and it's become the one meal I have at home almost every day. I brew some coffee and usually pair it with at least toast. (I know, toast is not breakfast...unless it's 10 o'clock and you have a meeting at 10:30 and you haven't showered yet.) I try to mix and match those two basics with yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, fruit, and/or - on very rare occasions - eggs or pancakes. I actually am not a fan of cooking in the morning, so I try to stick with things I can microwave, put in the toaster oven, or just pour milk over.

This ritual hasn't by any means made me a morning person (writes the girl who woke up at almost 11 o'clock today) but it has made my mornings more productive and focused and kept me from eating like a starving street dog at lunch. (Well, sometimes.) So yay, breakfast! It may not be the most important meal of the day (I mean, come on, it's the only one that doesn't have dessert), but it's pretty high up there.

Mom, Marni Memed Me!

Today's Meme: 7 Things About Me You'd Not Likely Guess (with apologies to Marni for taking so damn long to get around to doing this)

1. I hate getting my hair wet.

By extension, this means I'm not overly fond of the shower. I realize it's a necessity, particularly if I want to stay employed and/or have at least occasional sex, but I really quite dislike it. I went through a stage when I was about 9 or 10 when I didn't bathe at all unless forced. I was pretty happy when I found out my nephew Luke has been going through the same thing for the past couple of years, though I guess it's less weird if you're a boy.

2. I voted for a Republican once.

At the time, I was young and foolish and believed in campaign promises. The candidate was Dan Lungren and he was running for Attorney General. I admit I was somewhat swayed at the time by the fact that he was Catholic. Anyhow, big mistake, won't happen again, yada yada yada.

3. I'm a college drop-out.

I started college when I was 16, so I sometimes chalk this one up to youth. However, to be completely honest, I wasn't a great student without the structure and imposed discipline of high school and parents. It surprises a lot of people that I don't have a degree and probably more so that I have zero desire to go back to school for that piece of paper.

4. I'd really like to foster or adopt children.

For somebody who is sort of grossed out at the whole concept of being pregnant, as well as barely capable of taking care of cats, it's sort of shocking that I would want kids at all. And to be honest, it's not that I want kids in that whole Ozzie and Harriet nuclear family kind of way. It's more that I want to save somebody. I see these kids without families and despite my somewhat fucked-up childhood, I feel lucky to have had a family, people who loved me, a home to call my own. I want to give somebody that, minus the fucked-up part. I want to give a kid a family. In my opinion, nobody should ever have to feel unwanted or unloved...especially a child.

5. I was anorexic in high school.

Well, I certainly don't have THAT problem anymore. But yeah, I had an eating disorder. Not surprisingly, it started because of an off-hand comment my mother made about me looking chubby. I had braces and short hair and my face looked very round as a result. I certainly wasn't fat, or even plump. My dad used to joke that I had to put rocks in my pockets when the wind blew hard. But that comment from my mom...it just echoed around in my head and heart and made me lose my appetite. I started measuring everything I ate, which wasn't much. I was a freshman wearing size 12 girls jeans because even size 0 was big on me. My weight during this time was about 85-88 pounds on a slightly less than five-foot frame. I don't think I looked skeletal by any means, but I was certainly much, much thinner than I needed to be. It was sheer luck that I was recruited for the track team, which led to a renewed and voracious desire for food that has continued to this day. Thanks, Coach Akers.

6. I'm a night owl.

This probably stems from the fact that my mom never goes to bed before midnight and I used to sleep in her bed as a kid, since my dad worked third shift. We'd stay up late almost every night. Sometimes we'd just keep each other company in front of the television, falling asleep only after watching the news and Johnny Carson. Sometimes she'd be busy cleaning the kitchen or reading the paper or doing bills, and I'd take this as my cue to hang out and chat and nibble on snacks. I took it as a point of pride that she never said it was time for me to go to bed. However, she never went easy on me in the morning. When she woke up at six, I could count on her to unceremoniously boot me out and tell me to get ready for school. I used to get dressed half-asleep and then lay back down in my bed. That way, when she would knock on my door to check if I was awake, I could honestly say, "I'm already dressed!" Anyhow, I'm still a night owl and I still hate mornings. I do love sleep, though.

7. I (used to?) have a terrible temper.

Maybe this one is more obvious than I believe, I don't know. Most people these days tend to categorize me as bubbly or sparkly, and for the most part I am a pretty cheerful person. For those who haven't known me for more than a few years, I've come a long way. I've had a lot of trouble in the past controlling my temper. I've worked so hard to get where I am today, to an emotional space where I don't feel the need to destroy relationships or hurt other people or damage physical property when I am angry. I think more carefully about the things I say, and even more carefully about the types of people with whom I spend time. (Certain people bring out the worst in me.) I rarely yell, and though I'm prone to cursing and shouting when I drive, that's about the extent of my fury these days. Sometimes I get upset when discussing a work issue or politics (one of the things that can easily make my blood boil), but after I vent a bit and overheat a little, I'm usually back to normal pretty quick. It's sort of amazing just sitting here and thinking how different I am than I used to be. The wonders of therapy!

Anyhoodle, those are my seven things you probably wouldn't have guessed about me. What are yours? (I'm tagging you, Chromie and Leila.)

I Am Psychokinetic!

I can control the weather with my mind! Or my prayers!

The temperature today dropped markedly. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

So instead of telling you the theme letter for the day, I'm going to beam it DIRECTLY INTO YOUR MIND. Sweet!

A Thousand Words

I saw this meme over at Snackie's World and I really liked it. I used Flickr instead of Photobucket, 'cause that's just how I roll.

Here’s how it works:

  • Go to Flickr

  • Type in your answer to the question in the “search” box

  • From the first page of results, select a photo that best represents your answer

Well, THAT Took Long Enough...

I just realized I never finished Butter's 2007 Year-End Survey, so here are the last sixteen questions...I can't believe I actually completed this thing. Why do I get the weird feeling she had me do this so she can steal my identity?

Here are the first three posts:

Part I
Part II
Part III

And now, I present to you the finale of the 2007 City Elf Roundup.

31. Get a new job?

Nope. And only occasionally considered doing so.

32. How old did you turn this year?

I turned 29 for the third time.

33. Do you have a New Year's resolution?

I don't usually make resolutions. I have things I want to do in 2008, some of which I wanted to do last year and never got around to doing (learning to knit, going on a balloon ride, taking a calligraphy class.) I also have some new things I want to accomplish: get my passport, see a hockey game, spend more time writing, and go hiking. Oh, and also have sex with Christian Bale.

34. Do anything embarrassing?

My whole life is one big embarassment. Does the time I shot off my treadmill count?

35. Buy anything new from eBay?

No, I've never bought anything from eBay. I'm afraid of the internets.

36. What was your favorite purchase?

Well, either these shoes:

Or maybe my grey cashmere hoodie that I bought for my birthday and wear at least twice a week, or perhaps my lovely Dell Inspiron 1520 that I'm using right now.

37. Get married or divorced?

No, but I was supposed to do one of those.

38. Get arrested?

No, saints be praised!

39. Be honest - did you watch American Idol?

You know, probably for a minute or two, but I just wasn't into it this year.

40. Did you get sick this year?

Oh. My. God. Did I ever get sick! I was actually worried at various times that I had the bird flu or the plague. I was sick for the entire last two months of the year, coughing and hacking, sniffling and sneezing, sleeping like a coma victim and missing countless holiday events. My doctor thinks that I got some sinus drainage in my lungs (gross!) and then just wasn't able to get better. I've been using Advair and I would swear by it...it's a miracle drug.

41. Start a new hobby?

Does Yelping count? (Or as Aimee would say, does your daddy count?)

42. Been snowboarding?

No, never. But I'd like to try!

43. Are you happy to see 2007 go?

Sure, why not? It had to end sometime.

44. Drank Starbucks in 2007?

What? Yes, but not happily. I'm a regular at Zona Rosa; my backup coffee shop is Peet's.

45. Been naughty or nice?

Um. Define naughty?

46. What are you wishing for in 2008?

Health, happiness, love, joy, President Obama, and oh yeah, more sex. :)

2007 City Elf Roundup - Part III

We're almost done with this whole survey thing...this is the third of four posts that answer the very nosey Butter's questions about my 2007.

21. Made new friends?

That's an understatement. Yelp has been very good to my social life...and the funny thing is, while I probably never would have otherwise met most of people I now spend a lot of time with, they are now some of the closest, dearest friends I have ever had. I'm a lucky girl.

22. Favorite night out?

Oh, man...any night we spent at All Star singing karaoke, getting drunk, and then eating tacos at Leo's would rank right up there. Seeing Love with Tita was unforgettable. The Bruce Springsteen and Tony Bennett concerts were incredible. The evening Ben and I went to AOC for dinner was pretty lovely. And Yelp Prom was amazing...from what I can remember.

23. Any regrets?

What is life but a series of regrets? Of course I have regrets. I regret not telling Martha how much I loved her before she died. Other than that, most of my regrets are things I can change this year.

24. What do you want to change in 2008?

Oh, hey, that's a good follow-up question! I'd like to cook more, work out more, travel more, and have more sex. Mmmm, sex.

25. Overall, how would you rate this year?

I'd say four stars. It was a solid year, one with a lot of terrible sadness, but also one of overwhelming joys. I learned so much about who I am and how much stronger I am than I ever thought I could be; I felt so low at the beginning of the year and ended it feeling so loved and fulfilled that it was transcendant.

26. What would you change about 2007?

Nothing, because everything happens for a reason.

27. Other than home, where did you spend most of your time?

For the first few months, I spent it on the road: Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Davis, San Jose, Salinas, Fresno, Palm Desert, and Redding, just to name a few of the cities I visited for work.

After that, I'd say my office, Target, and Michael and Wendy's house.

28. Have any life changes in 2007?

Uh, yeah. Was supposed to get married and didn't, so readjusted to being single. Joined Yelp and turned into a foodie and for a while, a functional alcoholic. (Just kidding, I wasn't functional at all.)

29. Change your hairstyle?

Not really, unless you count not cutting it a change. It's long like it usually is; I only get it cut about 2-3 times a year.

30. New BF/GF?

Nope. Mama don't like to be tied down.

Phew! Almost done...

2007 City Elf Roundup...Part II

Part I is here

11. What sporting events did you attend?

This is really weird, but I don't think I went to any. I'ma change that this year.

12. What concerts/shows did you go to?

Ah, concerts were major highlights for me this year. I went with Tita to KIIS-FM's Wango Tango, mainly for the chance to see my boyfriend Robin Thicke. I saw Aesop Rock with my best friend at the Henry Fonda Music Box, where I also saw Spoon with Michael and Wendy. The opening acts for these shows - Black Moth Super Rainbow at Aesop Rock and Black Joe Lewis at Spoon - were really amazing. I saw Tony Bennett at the Greek Theatre with Tita and Aime, who happens to be a good friend of mine, perform at Jungle Rush and the Airliner. I saw Swell Season at the Wiltern with Ben. And I can't forget to mention the most spectacular concert I saw, Bruce Springsteen, with my wonderful, generous, handsome friend Masa.

13. Where do you live now?

I live in Pasadena with my two evil cats, Spike and Cash. I have a charming two-bedroom bungalow that is much cozier when the weather is more temperate, due to the fact there is zero insulation in this place.

14. Describe your birthday.

Best. Evar. I had an incredible time. Two days before, I was treated to the Bruce Springsteen concert. On my birthday, I had dinner with a small group of very close friends at Natalie's Peruvian, followed by ice cream at Scoops. Not only did I have my picture taken with the owner, Tae, but he gave me a free pint of vanilla rum ice cream! The weekend after my birthday I had a party at the Griffin, featuring about 40 of my pals and delicious cupcakes from Violet's. Oh, there was some drinking going on that night. I think I downed about 10 vodka tonics. I book-ended the night with dinner at Baracoa with Wendy and Tita before and tacos at Leo's after. A week later, Ben took me to dinner at Taylor's in Koreatown and to the Wiltern to see Swell Season. Yay, birthdays!

15. What's the one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2007?

I went on vacation with my sisters. One of them has seven kids, so it didn’t seem like we’d ever have a chance to take a trip together.

16. What has been your favorite moment(s)?

Eating dessert in Denver with my sisters. Sitting on the rooftop at Jungle Rush and looking at the stars. Any moment spent at All Star. Going to see Wicked with Tita. Riding the Gold Line with Ben. Dinner at Craft. Yelp Prom. Biking with Michael and Wendy. My organization’s Sacramento lobby day. The Zocalo event with James Ellroy. Seeing Bruce Springsteen. My birthday at the Griffin. Seeing my family at Thanksgiving. New Year’s Eve.

17. What's something you learned about yourself?

I’m popular!

18. Any new additions to your family?

Nope.

19. What was your best month?

My birthday month, November, especially because I also got to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family.

20. What music will you remember 2007 by?

I’ll remember it mostly by albums I listened to non-stop:

Fergie – The Dutchess
Timbaland – Timbaland Presents Shock Value
Gwen Stefani – The Sweet Escape
Nelly Furtado – Loose
Alicia Keys – As I Am
Kanye West – Graduation
Amy Winehouse – Back to Black
Feist – The Reminder
Common – Finding Forever
Keyshia Cole – Just Like You

But also by some of those songs I couldn’t get out of my head, like “Lean Like A Cholo”, “Easy”, “Bartender”, “Sensual Seduction”, “Colorful”, “Beautiful Girls”, “The Underdog”, “The Anthem”, and “Hey There Delilah”. It was a pretty good year in music, I think.

So, uh, I guess I didn’t finish this up before we entered 2008, but at least I’m still trying. More to come…

Hindsight is 20-20

My friend Buttercheeks sent me a year-end survey, ostensibly to learn more about me as a friend, but more likely because she's a psycho stalker and she wants to marry me.

It's 46 questions long (!) and trying to answer them all in one post in one sitting would probably make my fingers fall off, so I'm going to answer them in a series of posts that I hope to finish before we're in 2008. I just realized there are only four days left of this year, holy crap.

Anyhow, without further adieu...here is the 2007 City Elf Roundup, Part I.

1. Where did you begin 2007?

If I recall correctly, the Ex and I were at his best friend's brother's house in Canoga Park that evening.

2. What was your status by Valentine's Day?

I was single, but the Ex and I were still in the midst of our fake-up, and I think we may have had dinner that evening. I also got a mammogram that day!

3. Were you in school (anytime this year)?

Uh, no, thank God.

4. Did you have to go to the hospital?

Not for me, but I spent the longest day of my life there in July when my best friend was having an ablation to fix his chronic arrythmia.

5. Did you have any encounters with the police?

Unfortunately, no. I do love a man in uniform.

6. Where did you go on vacation?

In March, I visited Denver with my sisters and miraculously, nobody got hurt and there was very little weeping. I also went to Sacramento to go wine tasting with my friend Christy in April and to Las Vegas to see the mind-blowingly good Cirque du Soleil show Love with my friend Tita in June. And I made my annual pilgrimage to visit my family in Indiana at Thanksgiving, which was absolutely lovely.

7. What did you purchase that was over $500?

I bought a fancy-shmancy $750 television from Circuit City that didn't work right, so I returned it, so that probably doesn't count. I also bought a new laptop (yay!) from Dell, an Inspiron 1520. I'm using it right now!

8. Did you know anybody who got married?

Yep, but I didn't go to their wedding. (I wasn't invited. Hmph.)

9. Did you know anybody who passed away?

Yes, sadly, the Ex's mother, Martha, who was like a mother to me, passed away in August, just nine months after her husband Romeo died. It's still hard for me to believe that she's gone. I wear a necklace that was hers almost every day and I like to think it's a sort of talisman and that she's protecting me. I miss her so much.

10. Did you move anywhere?

Nope. Still living in Pasadena in the same place as last December.

Well, Butter, that's the first 10. Stay tuned for Part II, coming soon...

8 Things

One of my favorite bloggers, Leila over at not Jennifer Aniston, has tagged me with a meme. This is the first time I've been tagged without volunteering for it. Yay!

So I'm supposed to write 8 random things about myself. This is one of those exercises that feels like I should reveal something deep, or show how interesting and quirky I am. I feel somehow not up to the challenge, but here goes nothing.

1. I rub my legs together like a cricket to get to sleep, or sometimes just when I'm in bed and sleepy and/or content. What can I say? I read The Cricket in Times Square when I was like eight, and the eponymous cricket rubbed his legs together to go to sleep, which I found charming. Fast forward 25 years and now it's just a bad habit.

2. I hate onions. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this on here before, but it bears repeating. I really, really hate onions.

3. I briefly dated the creator of Ren & Stimpy while I was in college. I was young and foolish and the kind of girl, apparently, who is starstruck by cartoons. It was a very brief foray into the world of John K., but I do remember that he brought me flowers and Godiva chocolates, turned me on to the Mills Brothers while we listened to what was then 570 KLAC, and played me Elvis songs on his guitar. He also took me out to dinner at a place called Chianti on Melrose Avenue where he ordered a side of raw red onions, so obviously it was a relationship that was doomed from the start.

4. I wish I could whistle. Of all the things that make me really jealous, good whistling skills are quite high on the list. I just like people who whistle, especially cheerful whistlers, and have found that good whistlers usually have really lovely singing voices. I can neither whistle nor sing. *sigh*

5. I have an incredibly distinctive laugh. It's very recognizable; I've often had friends find me in a crowded bar because they heard my laugh from across the room. Most people like it. The rest...eh, fuck 'em.

6. I'm named after my sister. In between my brother and I, my mother gave birth to a stillborn baby girl. I was born three years later and I am her namesake, though my first name is spelled differently and I have a different middle name. I remember going to visit her grave on the weekends when I was little.

7. I don't have a passport. This is totally lame. I should have a passport, especially because I was planning on going to Greece this year for my honeymoon, which didn't take place because I didn't get married. My friends have informed me that it now costs more to get one than it did a year ago, plus it takes about six months to receive it. I should probably apply for one soon.

8. I would love to be a writer. All I've ever really wanted is to write mindless drivel that other people pay to read, but I'm terribly lazy and haven't really tried very hard. I've written as part of every job I've ever done and was at one point a contributor to LAist, but obviously I'd rather dick around with Yelp than really apply myself.

Hmm, these eight things started off light-hearted and then got a bit heavier than I anticipated. At any rate, I hope you enjoyed them and learned something about your friendly neighborhood miscreant.

As for who I'm tagging - well, I don't know a lot of bloggers, so I'll say my girl over at Choco & Tomago, my friend Pete Dudchenko, and anyone else who wants to jump on the meme bandwagon. Leave me a comment if you're interested.

I Repent!

I am ashamed - ASHAMED! - at my consistent lack of posting on here. Again. Forgive me, my loyal and loving readers? (Reader?)

To try to get back into the swing of things, here is a list of 10 things. They are in no particular order, and have no special significance or relationship to each other, but nonetheless, I present them to you, humbly and without further ado.

1. I sincerely believe that some of my clothes are being fruitful and multiplying on their own, while others are cannibalizing garments they dislike. How else to explain that I can't find my Dooce shirt or favorite black cardigan, but seem to have seventy billion sports bras all of a sudden?

2. Is it "all of a sudden" or "all of the sudden"? And what the fuck is a sudden?

3. I feel very fat this week, and yet cannot stop eating. I can't wait for my workout with my trainer tomorrow night; that should be LOADS of fun considering the quantities of alcohol and pizza I consumed this week.

4. I bought a bell for my bike! Listen for me behind you if you're biking in the Arroyo Seco. *ding ding*

5. I realized today that I only purchase underwear from two places: Target and Victoria's Secret. Is that weird?

6. My new favorite snack: Chocolate Sunflower Seed Drops (candy coated chocolate covered sunflower seeds) from Trader Joe's. Although I think I am dangerously close to becoming sick of them already since I've been nibbling at them for six days straight.

7. If anyone ever tells you that Spega yogurt is awesome, DO NOT LISTEN. It does come in a cute little glass jar, but it costs like three dollars for two tiny containers and tastes like watery, nasty, spoiled milk blended with cat ass.

8. My mom cut our phone call short today so she could watch a football game (Dallas Cowboys vs. Chicago Bears) - quite hurtful!

9. I had the most boring dream in the world this morning, and yet for some reason, it bothers me that I can't remember what it was.

10. There are only 38 shopping days left until my birthday.

Ta-da!
