Not Fat, Just Soft

So I realize I've gained some weight in the past couple of years. Okay, a lot of weight, for me. And no one at home has really said anything to me about it, except my seven-year-old niece Anna came close this time. She cocked her head at me while I was at her house and said, "You look different from the last time I saw you." I laughed and said, "Even more lovely? More stunningly beautiful?"

I saw her face sort of scrunch up while she tried to figure out how to break the news to me that those words weren't exactly what she was thinking, without hurting my feelings. Then my sister Sandra said, "Auntie isn't exactly the most humble person, Anna." And Anna smiled and nodded, believing, I am certain, that humble is a synonym for thin.
